If you’ve been thinking about trying Kuk Sool Won for weeks (or months) but haven’t actually walked through the door yet, you’re not alone. The thing holding you back is often the same for everyone… Nerves.
Not “am I going to get hurt” nerves. The other kind. Will I look like I have no idea what I’m doing? Is everyone else going to be way fitter than me? What if I’m the oldest person there? What if I can’t keep up?
Here’s the important thing to remember: every single person in Kuk Sool had to take their very first step onto the mats. We were each the least experienced person in the room, once upon a time. Everyone.
You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or experienced to start.
That’s not just a thing we say. It is how we operate. We’re not throwing you into a room full of advanced students and hoping you keep up. We are inviting you to train with more experienced members so they can help guide and encourage you through your class. There’s absolutely no judgement on your first day!

You are not too old.
It doesn’t matter how old you are. We accept adults of all ages and everyone can make progress from where you are now. Keeping active is so important for our physical health, mental health and quality of life. You can always start making tiny improvements and one day who knows where you’ll be. Our oldest student was in his sixties when he started. You can read more about his journey in this blog post.
You most likely won’t be the only beginner.
New students start all throughout the year, not just in January. Chances are someone else in that class is as nervous as you are. Some of our students have been training for a few weeks or months, and others for years or decades. We all train together and encourage each other all the same.

Nobody wants you to fail.
Everyone in that class will be genuinely impressed when you make the smallest of improvements. Everyone remembers how hard they worked to improve. Some things come easily, some things you will have to work hard at. It is different for everyone and that’s ok.
You can come and just watch, if that’s what you need.
Some people like to see a class before they’re on the mat themselves. That’s completely fine. Come along, get a feel for it, and join in when you’re ready.
The hardest part of starting martial arts isn’t the martial arts. It’s the five minutes before you walk through the door. Everything after that tends to take care of itself.
If you want to see exactly what arriving for your first visit looks like — watch on below.
